By Joan Stanley, chair of Mary Church Terrell Scholarship committee
We are pleased to announce the 2013 recipient of our Mary Church Terrell Scholarship. Congratulations to Roxana Juarez-Salazar, a native of El Salvador, who came to this country in 2006.
Roxana, age 17, is an honor graduate of Bell Multicultural High School, who exemplifies the stringent qualifications for our scholarship. She has a GPA of 3.82 and has been engaged in numerous extracurricular and community activities. Despite the fact that she comes from an immigrant family, who are still learning English, she has demonstrated proficiency in English as a second language that has enabled her to volunteer in the Interpreters Department of La Clinica del Pueblo. She has self-imposed high standards of excellence and works very hard to achieve them. For example, she often writes several drafts of a paper, before obtaining one that is acceptable.
She is focused on her primary objective to earn a college degree with a major in biology and nursing. She writes in her personal history: “Studying nursing will allow me to learn of the emotional, health, and mental problems people might have and find ways to help them in any way I can.”
In order to fulfill her passion for helping others, Roxana will enroll in Community College, University of the District of Columbia this fall. We wish her well!
